Irregular Periods
I got my first periods when I was 13 years old. I got the next period straight after a year and then again after a year. Thereafter, I got my periods every six months for over 2 years and then it would come every 3-4 months. I took it to be a normal thing as I had consulted a couple of doctors and they said there was nothing to worry as it would get to normal over years. I was fine with it and moved ahead with my life.

I think my irregular periods are also somehow interconnected with constipation. Having said that, my periods didn’t get regular even when I overcame the constipation problem.

When you don’t get your periods regularly which means every month, then your internal body goes through a rollercoaster. I would feel nausea, irritation, and all other PMS symptoms every month but the periods wouldn’t come and all this got disturbing. Being young and fairly new to the topic of menstruation, add to that how many societies in the world consider it as a stigma or something not to be discussed openly; I was left to fend with the problem alone. I had informed my mother and a few friends and I would get a lot of suggestions to eat dates or jaggery etc. to get periods. But nothing would work. I took Ayurveda medicines for more than a year but that didn’t help either.

My elder brother was my first yoga teacher but as years passed I learned from other teachers too. I was too shy to discuss my periods problem with my brother. I approached Geetaji who suggested a few asanas but said she won’t admit me in therapy classes as I was young and the problem wasn’t grave. So, I had to practice the asanas in the practice hall in the presence of Guruji and Geetaji. They didn’t teach me directly then because I still was in the intermediate level classes, but they knew me very well. Chandra, another practitioner and a friend, was kind enough to take up the responsibility and take me to practice hall 4 times a week where I had to do my practice and she would guide me. I was playful and sometimes would do some asana casually as I would think my Gurus were not watching me but instantly Chandra would come running to me and say do correctly!! I really enjoyed my practice and within a month, I got my periods, but I had to keep up with the practice for 6 months till my periods got regular.

I was lucky to be guided by my yoga Gurus but what about the girls, women who don’t have guidance? My suggestion would be to try the best options available around you but also get yourself physically active with some form of exercises, yoga, walking, or sports. You can get recipes from your grandmother’s kitchen and see what works the best, but don’t give up at any point.

I can suggest a remedy, but please try it after consulting your doctor - 2 tablespoons of Black Strap Molasses and 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider vinegar in lukewarm water for 2 months twice in a day, once in the morning on an empty stomach and other before sleeping. This is just a suggestion and one should keep looking for the right remedy.
Once again, this platform is open for discussion and invites more suggestions and ideas to help women overcome this problem.
