Ovarian cyst (Endometriosis)

It is common to find ovarian cysts in women. As a lay person I was told that there are 2 types of ovarian cysts, one which is outside the ovaries and other which is inside the ovaries. I had the ones inside the ovaries and the terms used for such ovarian cyst are Endometriosis or chocolate cyst or even PCOD (Polycystic ovarian cyst).

I was going through a lot of stress at that time and suddenly I saw a change in the flow of my periods and pain in my lower abdomen during my yoga practice. So I thought of getting it checked with a gynaecologist who suggested a sonography and the ovarian cyst was detected. I was in tears to know that I had a cyst and the doctor correctly said that it was due to mental stress and change in hormones but unfortunately there weren’t any remedial medicines other than the hormonal medicines to cure this problem. She prescribed me a hormonal medicine but at the same time she said if after 3 months my cysts were still there she would suggest a small surgery to remove the cyst. The word surgery scared me so much that I never returned to that doctor and that was my last visit to a gynaecologist for that problem.

My yoga practice had been regular but in spite of that I encountered this problem. At that point of time I was having a part time consultancy job which I could work from home as well but my abdominal pain got worse by the day so much so that I couldn’t sit on a chair to work on the computer for more than 10 minutes. Lower abdominal pain even while practicing asanas got so bad that I cried one day due to the pain. That’s when I decided to drop everything and attend to the problem. Some colleagues and friends scared me that this particular cyst if unattended can get cancerous. I left my job and approached my yoga guru, Guruji and he took me under his guidance in the practice sessions. The tradition of my yoga school is that we ourselves being yoga practitioners and teachers have to practice and overcome our problems in the practice sessions under our Guru’s guidance.

So my yoga practice specifically for my ovarian cysts started. I used to get very tired after my practice. Due to the cysts I had gained 5 kgs and was also losing a lot of hair. I took homeopathic medicine for a few months as my friends suggested and it helped in reducing the pain but I discontinued later. I got busy with my practice and teachings but I used to keep a check on the cysts by doing a sonography every six months. Luckily the size of my cysts didn’t grow due to my yoga practice and I felt energetic.

One fine day I thought to myself that I’m not the first woman or the only woman to have this problem. I am sure that many women since ages have had this problem but in olden days they might have their remedies through food or herbal medicines. So out of curiosity I started asking elder female relatives about what food is good for this particular problem and I also started researching on the internet. I gathered some information and in addition to my yoga practice, I started to cleanse my body internally with that food pattern.

I am sure that Ayurveda and Homeopathy too have remedies for the same but I think I didn’t give enough time to it. Finally after 2 years of being detected by ovarian cyst when I went for the sonography my ovaries were rid of the cysts and I was so happy.

My suggestion to the women would be to attend gynecological problems wisely and please do not ignore it. I can understand that not everybody can have a yoga guru or the right yoga teacher to guide you but I am sure there are other alternatives like Ayurveda and homeopathy. But more than medicines you should bring changes in your lifestyle and drop the stress and resort to the right food habits especially something specific for that particular problem for a couple of months or more.

The specific things that I added to my normal food routine are mentioned below but please note that it is something that suited me and cannot guarantee that they will suit everybody

Mornings

2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera pulp (I got a can of Aloe Vera extract from a medical store. I used to take it on an empty stomach)

After 15 minutes I would take 2 tablespoons black strap molasses (kakvi which isn’t too sweet) with 1 tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar in lukewarm water. I got this recipe from a website named earthclinic.com (but again you have to decide whether this suits you or not)

After 15 minutes I would eat 1 boiled beet root followed by my regular breakfast.

Day time

I started eating a lot of fibrous fruits, especially watermelon and pineapple. My lunch and dinner were normal as usual, no changes in that.

Night time

Before going to bed repeat the Apple cider vinegar and black strap molasses in a glass of lukewarm water.

The above food ritual I had for a month and a half and then stopped. 2 months later when I went for my sonography the cysts were gone.

So in case women don’t get time for exercise (though I strongly insist that everyone should incorporate a routine of some exercises, yoga or walking) they should resort to the herbal benefits of some specific food and overcome their problems. Fact remains that many women are already aware of the medicines from their kitchen for centuries now hence I keep this platform open for discussion and sharing of ideas for benefits of women health.
